Summer Book Tag 2020

I found this fun summer book tag thanks to Lindsey from BFCG, Books for Christian Girls. I thought it would be fun to think back to all of the books I have read recently!
Here we go!
Q U E S T I O N S
1. Iced Drink- a refreshing book
The Cracked Spine by Paige Shelton

From page one I was hooked. The main character was intriguing and I felt so connected to her. Having been to Edinburgh, where the story takes place, I thought the author did a wonderful job of describing the area and the Scottish experience. The mystery kept me guessing until the very end and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole journey! I can’t wait to read the next in the series!
2. Cotton Candy- a book that was fluffy and sweet
When Calls the Heart Series by Janette Oke

If you are looking for a light and sweet story, this series is perfect for you! I enjoyed each of the books in the series and always find myself returning to them when I am in need of something to make me smile. This is a beautiful story, a heartfelt romance, and inspiring.
3. Sunglasses- a dark book
The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon

This book caught my attention when I was browsing through the book store. I read the back and it sounded so interesting – a mystery about books! This book lived up to all of my hopes. It is a little sad and dark at some points… but overall it is a fabulous story that had me guessing all the way until the end. I learned so much about Barcelona. The author gives detailed descriptions that make you feel like you are there walking with Daniel, the main character. I highly recommend this book to anyone!
4. Picnic on a Rainy Day- a sad book
The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

I have nothing but wonderful things to say about this book. It was brilliantly written and vivid. Set in WWII Nazi-occupied France, it is very emotional and deep. You feel everything the characters feel and it is like you are there with them through their terrible trying experiences of living during the war. The character showed such incredible strength and love. Even thinking back to it now, I have tears in my eyes.
5. Sand- a book that irritated you
Labyrinth by Kate Mosse

There were some parts that I enjoyed, but overall this book wasn’t for me. It was very hard to get into the book and relate to the characters. I had heard good things from others, but I was disappointed.
6. Summer Blockbuster- favorite book-to-screen adaptation
The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien

The Hobbit is one of my favorite books for all time. Honestly, I have read it so many times I can’t even count them. I loved how they made The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, so I was excited when I had heard they were making it into not just one movie, but three! Then I got a little nervous. For me, very rarely does the movie ever live up to the book. But let me tell you, those movies did not disappoint one bit! This is one of the few times I can truthfully say I loved the movies as much as the books. Wow, did I really just say that! Haha!
7. Dropped Ice Cream- a book you were anticipating, but it wasn’t good
Maisie Dobbs by Jacqueline Winspear

This is one book that I was really looking forward to reading. One of my favorite genres is a historical mystery so I thought this series would be right by my ally. I don’t know why I just could not get into this book. I wanted to like it, but I just didn’t care for the writing and found it very hard to relate to the main character. It seems that so many people love this book series… and I was greatly disappointed that I did not enjoy it. Overall I liked the end of book 1, but not enough to read any more of the series.
8. Palm Tree- a tall book you loved
Plaid and Plagiarism: The Highland Bookshop Mystery Series by Molly MacRae

This has turned out to be one of my favorite mystery series! I am looking forward to reading the third book! It is a modern cozy mystery based in a small Scottish village. I loved all four of the main characters and thought they were well-rounded and down to Earth. I found this to be a refreshing and light mystery!
9. Bonfire- a book you want to burn
The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

As someone who enjoys Greek mythology, I really wanted to love it. And honestly have a hard time writing that I didn’t like a book. It is nothing personal to the author or those who enjoyed it. This is merely my opinion and feelings. It seems that most readers have loved the story. As excited as I was to read this book, I knew right away it was not for me. I only got about halfway through the book before I gave up. I just couldn’t connect with the way the author wrote and depicted the characters. The story felt very different from the original, Homers Iliad.
10. Fireworks- a book that exploded onto the scene
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows

This wonderful story is told through letters. It felt so real and made me want to jump on a plane and go meet the characters on Guernsey! I really enjoyed the storyline and the way it was told. I would highly recommend this book to all who enjoy historical fiction.
